Mackenzie grew up in Sunset Beach, North Carolina. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a B.B.A in economics and accounting. Prior to attending law school, Mackenzie was a Teach for America corps member, teaching high school mathematics in Orangeburg, South Carolina and worked for the United States Senate as a field representative in Oklahoma. She received her M.S. in Education from Johns Hopkins University and her J.D. from Wake Forest University.
