The Oklahoma "Land Run" opened for settlement portions of the Oklahoma territory to American citizens on April 22, 1889.
The discovery of oil in the mid- 1920s led to Tulsa becoming the Oil Capitol of the World.
Oklahoma's central location on the continent has made it a leader in the transportation industry. The Federal Aviation Administration's training center for air traffic controllers is located in Oklahoma City.
"The Guardian" statue adorns the top of the State Capitol dome, completed in 2004. He symbolizes Oklahoma's native past while envisioning a bright and prosperous future.
