On July 18, 2019, PCH attorneys, Inona Jane Harness and Shannon E. Bickham, won a defense verdict at trial for their client, a physician who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology. The medical negligence trial took place over eight (8) days in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. The care at issue occurred in 2015 when, during labor, the mother experienced a sudden, catastrophic uterine rupture. The rupture put the lives of the baby and mother at great risk. Ms. Harness and Ms. Bickham argued that there was no way to prevent or predict the rupture. They also asserted that the mother and baby were saved because of the physician’s heroic actions to quickly recognize the rupture and deliver the baby in just 8 minutes. Plaintiffs asked the jury to award damages in excess of $20,000,000. Instead, after a short deliberation, the jury returned a unanimous verdict in favor of the physician, as well as the co-Defendant hospital.
Way to go Inona and Shannon!
